Emma la Rouge

Hybrid Gallica
Hybridized by Jean-Pierre Vibert 1999

This wonderfully fragrant rose has very double blooms, each about three inches across. The petals are deep crimson-red to violet. Growth is vigorous.

Named after Emma la Rouge, Emma Goldman (1869’Äì1940), a political activist, who was vilified by the press as Red Emma or Queen of the Anarchists. She was stripped of her U.S. citizenship and J. Edgar Hoover went so far as to direct her deportation to Russia calling her "The most dangerous woman in America". For more information please link to these pages at pbs.org.
